Literature homework- Do I sympathise the Joker?
Monday, July 6, 2009
I do not sympathise with the Joker as he misused his positive traits (cleverness) to commit crimes, threatening the lives of innocent people living in Gotham City. Although he was abused by his father as a child and had a bad childhood, it is no excuse for his behaviour. That shows that he is a rather heartless and despicable person.

The reason I do not sympathizing the Joker is because he is a law breaker as he rob banks. He robbed banks because of his greed for money. The other reason is because his desire is to upset social order through terrorism in Gotham City, which threatens the lives of people living in Gotham City. He is also very cruel as he leaves his victims with post-mortem smiles, with the use of a knife instead of chemical manipulation.

Although he had a bad childhood life and also was abused by his father, he should not find that as an excuse to treat other people that way. In another version of the story, it is said that the Joker was not actually always smiling, but it is because his father had used a knife to cut his mouth, making hi seem like he is always smiling. I think maybe it is the way of how his father had treated him that had influenced him to behave like how he is today. It is said that he is working to support his pregnant wife and his unborned child. How he is acting like today does not seem like his selfless self at all. But although it may be that the chemical manipulation that had caused him to commit crimes, I still do not sympathise him.

Overall, I do not sympathise the Joker because of all his wrongdoings despite his pitiful and horrible backgrounds. I think he should just let go of the past and move on with his life.
